Gold & Green

I’ve been a #SharingwithWriters subscriber and contributor for almost 10 years, and I am very happy to give back to the wonderful Carolyn Howard-Johnson and the Author community by designing this new look for the Newsletter.

I enjoyed creating this with Carolyn’s website branding colors and here’s what I think about the significance of gold & green:

Carolyn truly is the gold standard for curating and sharing “How To” content. She never misses an opportunity to ask “How did you do that?” followed by “Would you like to share?”. If you read her Newsletter, you’ll see it is packed with valuable insights and great Tips for writing, editing, publishing, and promoting. She’s all about doing things frugally and always shares information about what is FREE. So green and all the shades of it, must be a reminder to Authors about saving money by doing things the frugal way.

It is fun to work with colors, and I hope more writers will find gold and green in Carolyn’s wisdom.

Inspired by the view from Artist Point – Mount Diablo State Park, California. See more nature poems in the book Enchanted Bay Area

Looking back over
Everything that was
Getting over the rocks
That were harder to pass

Time is the healer
That tirelessly draws
A pattern of hope
Over life’s great expanse

Seeing the bigger picture
Beautiful with the scars
A point to be grateful..
Rocks can be north stars

The Power of Poetry: News

“Poetry can bridge the distance to touch hearts all over the world.” – Samanthi Fernando

Featured Poem: Birds of Paradise

The adventure in poetry is, you never know who or what your next source of inspiration will be. And more than that, you may never know who your poetry will touch and how..
Birds of Paradise is a Mother’s Day Poem many readers enjoyed. So what do you think inspired me to write it – birds, siblings or something else? It was a poetic article about a kite show written by my talented friend Sharlene De Chickera. The mother in this poem for me, is Sri Lanka – the paradise where I grew up. But the power of poetry is – for you, it can be any shared motherly figure, who draws her children to the warmth of home. READ Sharlene’s Sunday Times Article

Karma in a song with a story

Michael Gaither’s song Somewhere I Went Right (co-written with John Cirillo) from his new album Hey Karma, tells a beautiful story that touched my heart.

The reflective lyrics in this song, channel karma and gratitude, showcasing the power of poetry.

Check out my review of the album, and find Michael’s fun & sincere Americana music here

THANK YOU to my Many Mothers & Muses

easter-inspirationIn my latest book On Rose Petal Wings you’ll find poems celebrating girlhood, sisterhood, motherhood – all inspired by women I have had the privilege of knowing. Along with many mothers I love (aunts, teachers and mothers of friends), this collection carries some very special dedications to my mother and grandmother. As you’ll see, I had many muses for the colorful characters in this book. So here’s a big THANK YOU to all of them! A special note of gratitude to my friend Jacqueline in Australia – who inspired me with her openhearted nature and mothering spirit. The poem Voyager’s Rose is about her.

An Author’s Dream

Sparkle Forever – Celebration of Friendship

January 8, 2017 – Grand Oriental Hotel, Colombo, Sri Lanka

It was a dream come true to complete the dedication of Sparkle Forever and celebrate friendship with those who inspired many of the poems in the book. My deepest gratitude to my family for organizing this lovely presentation.

Thank you to all who attended. It was wonderful to see old friends and share my poetry with you. Special thanks to Lilanthi, Dulanie, Viranthi and their talented daughters for making the event a great success.

It was a joy to show my appreciation to the guests of honor – my Teachers! The grand finale was my father singing the Friendship Song he composed for the occasion.

DEDICATION: 25 year remembrance for my dear friend Saumya (Sam) Almeida who taught me and many others what Friendship Unlimited was all about.

I Thank God

I give thanks for all the angels
God has provided for my journey
Those who I know are with me
and those I am blessed to be with

I give thanks for the ones
who continue to care
And those who cared once
when I needed them most

I give thanks for the privilege
of knowing I am loved
On Thanksgiving morning
I thank God for you

The Starting Light

Life is a journey of constant improvement
And the road we are on is never straight
As each step calls for great discernment
The light at the start carries great weight

It is from the past we draw the lessons
That can enlighten our task at present
To find our course to a victorious future
We are prepared by every good teacher

It was my great pleasure to write this Poem and special prayer of gratitude for the Bishop’s College Past Teachers Reunion.

The poem was given as a keepsake and the prayer was used to bless Teachers from 6 decades who attended the event on November 5th, 2016.

PRAYER for BC Teachers

Thank You Lord for the starting lights You provided us at Bishop’s College. Thank You for every Teacher who put their hearts into leading us forward into a bright future. For it is through their selfless efforts, that we find ourselves still journeying in the right direction. As the multitude of hearts they touched, shine all over the world – may these dear Teachers feel the warm glow of grateful love returning to bless their caring hearts.
God Bless our BC Teachers.

Purple Petals

This morning
Outside my window
Like a butterfly
In slow motion
I watched
A petal fall
And I wondered
How long before
This phenomenon
Would be gone

I stepped outside
To take a look
And their color
Made me smile
These petals..
I told myself
Are going to be
Vibrant for a while

Dazzling in the sun
They seem to say
We may not be
Here forever
But we shall shine
While we’re here.
From the flowers
Of the same tree
We are purple after all

Red leaves in summer

Mother Nature has a way of reminding us of what we need when we need it – Samanthi Fernando

Gazing out a Cafe window
One afternoon in summer
Amidst all the greenery – one tree spoke to me..

In red leaves I saw written
“The courage to be different”
The opening phrase – from the journals of my youth
